Seed Calculator

Calculate how many seeds you need based on garden area, plant spacing, and germination rate.

How It Works

Enter your garden area, plant spacing, and seed germination rate. The calculator adds extra seeds to account for germination failure, so you end up with the right number of plants.

Formula

Seeds Needed = (Plants Required) / Germination Rate

Frequently Asked Questions

What is germination rate?

Germination rate is the percentage of seeds that successfully sprout. Fresh seeds from quality suppliers typically germinate at 80-95%. Older seeds may drop to 50-70%.

Should I plant extra seeds?

Yes, always plant 10-25% more seeds than you need to account for seeds that do not germinate. For expensive seeds, plant 2 per hole and thin to one seedling.
